I drove by Sand Pit and Kilowatt lakes today.
Kilowatt is a mud hole. I'm not sure I would jump in it if I were on fire.
The Sand Pit, however, deserves a closer look. It has been years since I have been to Heber Springs, but if my memory serves, this lake looks comparable in terms of turbidity. I could see several feet down into it in the 5pm sun. Considering that the recent rains have most likely made it much worse than normal, I may take another look when it's been dryer. It's fairly large - as large as a lot of quarries that many people dive, but I could not get a sense of the depth. There is a trimmed grassy path that leads around it that is large enough for a car and there is no gate. It's clearly not public land. There were signs posted. One said 'No Tresp[faded]' and the other said '[faded]spassing!'. Who knows that they are supposed to say.
The path around the lake is actually quite scenic and reminiscent of what you find at Shelby Farms. In any case, it would be a desperate mans dive at best. If it clears up after a couple weeks of little rain, it might be worth a closer look. Any one else want to take on Mr. Martini's challenge?
