Since I've finished my class in February I have not been able to do the check out dives b/c of cold weather in OHIO, and my insturctors belief that everyones first dive should be in reasonably warm water so that they are not miserably cold. Since I finished the class my insturctor has noticed my itch to get wet so he's always let me come get in the water with his classes and rehash the skills and I've become very good at all of them. But today is the day that counts today I will FINALLY get my checkout dives done. At 11 am I get off work and I'm taking off to the local quarry to get wet wish me luck guys.

Well good luck! We expect a full report

I tend to agree with your instructor that there is no point in making check-out dives traumatic. It's good to be challenged but this is supposed to be fun too.

If well equipped you should just fine in the water and you'll be ready to go just as the mild water season gets going.

Out of work at 11:00 and doing it all today?

Pete

yeah I get out of work about 11am and I'm traveling down to the quarry which is about a 30 minute drive from here shoudl be there by noon once I go home to grab my wetsuit and mask fins snorkle, but I think i'm doing two or three dives today and two or three tommorow. I haven't put my dive profile together yet b/c when I was in class we didn't know how time or anyother factors may limit us on the actual day hopefully I"ll get in two or three today and the rest tommorow. I have a 7mm farmer john so i've been ready to get out for a while I've been itching at it ... I will give you guys a full report for sure

What exactly is covered in a check out dive from my understanding they'll just go through all the skills in class and then you'll get to perform a planned dive and that's all there really is to it

When I did mine.....Two spring dives. We did all the skills. Then we did two ocean dives. We planned our dives and the intructor just followed to make sure we were checking guages, staying with buddies, safety stops, ect..

That sounds great! You should be fine in 7mm

Pete

As said you will do your skills,like- set your rig up,run your dive table, clear your mask, buddy breathe, controlled emergency assent= blow bubbles on the way up! and a basic Navigation skill test, and so on no fears!
Sounds like you will work thru it with no problems,
Good luck!
Dive safe,
Brad

I don't know if this makes sense but the thing that I'm most excited about is that my insturctor has had me run through all these skills so many times that I'm not nervous about being asked to run through them at all. I'm just excited abotu getting in open water. My instructor has given me a day in the water every day since my class ended and all the practice makes me really confident going into today
I hope I don't get to confident, but I think i'll be okay b/c I respect the importance of nailing these skills and taking it seriously

Just out of curiosity, what dive shop are you going to? And where are you going to do your check out dives? I am in Columbus also and thus far have only taken an Intro To Scuba class although I am going to sign up for classes to get my certification. Your dive instructor sounds really good.
