i can only dive my semi-dry into the mid 50s....and i'm a skinny person too....40s are WAY too cold to dive wet for me.
 
I say take a caribbean dive trip with a lay over in the US. Buy your gear here. From what I understand a piece of equipment is usually sold with the same numerical value and not the same price. Meaning a $400 piece of equipment generally gets sold for 400 pounds. If you make the US a stop on your way to the caribbean, you wont have to pay taxes on the equipment on your return to the UK since it would technically be used.
