I just saw in the news that the Atlantic is 12 deg warmer than usual and may throw a major hurricane our way this year. On the other side this is great for those wanting to get into diving earlier as 12 deg is a major difference.

I wondering if there is anyone with oceanography experience that could explain this better than the news did. Any possibilty we break 73 degrees this summer?

I'm assuming this is a troll, but seriously i don't think there could be a 12 degree temperature change in an ocean in one year. I've ofton thought amere 2-3 degree change toanocean temperature would be disasterous to the polar ice caps and cause world wide flooding. Check the sources of this statement and I'm almost certain you will find them to be either entirely wrong or greatly exagerated.

I agree with Farrakhan, this looks like a nonsense report. No matter how tempting it might be to enjoy warmer temps - the results would be disastrous.

If you want warmer - get closer to the Equator - it works for me - regularly.

The ocean is currently 36 to 39 degrees, which is right about where it normally is this time of year. A 12 degree difference is *absurd* and would cause catestrophic global changes. Maybe 1-2 degrees and the hyphen is missing, perhaps?

It stated that current Atlantic temperatures are about 7f warmer than average and that we are due for a major hurricane since we haven't had one in a long time.

I can tell you that here in Portugal the water is still as cold as ever, dont se myself gettin in this year in a shorty, gotta be a joke

The referenced article talks about surface temperatures. I agree that a 7 degree variance in average temperature would be an enormous change with big consequences, but I wonder if there is much more volatility in surface temperatures such that this or even the 12 degree number cited earlier is plausible.

I wouldn't say it a pure troll message, more like a water cooler thread. Ide agree 12 deg is extreme and would take the news report as a grain of salt. Matt did get 40 at Cat rock at depth this weekend and thats quite warm for this time of the year.

I know the max temps we get ar 72-73 and wondered if given that the report was accurate could we see higher summer temps.

Now the report said the temps were higher than before but didnt go on to say the Atlantic as a whole is now 12 deg warmer. It was on ABC this morning.
