Well this weekend wasn't the best weather wise for the auspicious opening of ab season, however, Scubajunkee and I were able to limit today. The swell was predominantely from the South, which washed out the usual sites. We had great luck at South Fisk Mill, which points to the North. The Rangers where out in force and we had a helicopter buzz us several times. Kinda nice to know that help was close at hand.

One cautionary note to other fellow divers. On weekends like these it can be very dangerous, if you aren't familiar with our coast. You have to know where to go and it really helps to be in good shape. One of the reasons that there were so many rangers out in force today is that they expected people to get into trouble.

Be safe, know your limits, have fun, eat abalone!!!

I heard a rumor that four people where arrested in Sonoma County for having too small of abs on opening day. For at least one of the people it wasn't there first time arrested for ab poaching.

Rotten apples in every barrel!

My wife and I did South Gerstle today. Conditions were excellent, with an easy entry and exit. There was a lot of runoff (a small stream) but once we got out a little ways it cleared right up. A good 6 - 8' vertical vis on the top and 4 to 6 on the bottom (20 - 30'). Got to try out my new Freediving fins, which were great and used my new ab boogie board, which works very well for the North Coast. I copied the board from here:

My wife was skunked, and I took two since we didn't have many people for dinner.

Nice setup Mark! Glad you had a good time. It looked a little rough over that way when I went by. Hopefully it will be better for next weekend.
