GREAT dive tonight at Vets Park with Dana Rodda & Chris Menjou. Many Target Shrimp and crabs on the shallow sand leading out to the canyon but many, many eggs and squid in the canyon itself. 58º on my gauge at 70-80 feet, which is where the action was. Dozens and dozens and dozens of mating squid, thousands of eggs in many clusters, hundreds of Target Shrimp in the eggs of feasting on dying squid, Cusk Eels, Sarcastic Fringeheads, and even a really big Sheep Crab. The bonus of it all was finding TWO juvy Black Sea Bass in 14' of water on the kick/safety-stop back in. Vis was 20-30 feet to boot. A fabulous dive and truly the calm before the storm.

Love it when we encounter an orgy of opalescens! Here are a few screen grabs from a HUGE field of squid eggs off Hen Rock, Catalina Island, in 2013. I sent pictures to Jean-Michel Cousteau and he came down with a film crew to film these as part of his IMAX 3D film Jean-Michel's Secret Ocean 3D.
