I want to give a big thanks again to the folks at Discovery Diving out of Beaufort, North Carolina !! :D I went out with them yesterday June 22nd. It was the first time I made it out onto the ocean in North Carolina. The staff was awesome and very friendly. We did a lionfish round-up as part of a N.O.A.A study. All in all great dives and friendly staff. Oh, and yes if your wondering. Lionfish are very tasty !! :D

Which site did you visit? Rock pile?

I've heard that the folks from Discovery have really been collecting a lot of lionfish on these dives. It will be neat to see how many lionfish are around those sites next year.

Yes, the first dive was on the 'rockpile' . Which in itself is a really cool wreck. I was told they went out a few weeks ago and collected around 130 lionfish on the site. This trip was a return to clear the rest. The goal is to clear the site of all or most lionfish. Then return at intervals to see how fast the population rebounds. The other dive was on the 'U-352' again a trully amazing dive. They also collected lionfish from this wreck as well.

Since I'm not that familiar with NC diving, have you guys decided to declare war on lionfish ? What I mean are NC divers in general spearing them on a regular basis ? I know it's kinda changing the direction of the thread but oh well.

There is not an active war on them, but Discovery is doing the Lionfish Round Ups at least once a month to help reduce the numbers. The removed lionfish will go to restaurants and the data from them will help NOAA is their research.

Thanks for the info. To tell you the truth diveonthefive and it won't be very PC of me. I hope we do declare war on them. They seem to be like cockroaches. I have know problem in eradicating this pest even if it is only in local areas. For all you that haven't tried it, they are absolutly delicious as well. :gator:

Let me guess - they taste like chicken!

I have actually heard they taste like sea bass.
