First off, let me say a huge THANK YOU to those who have helped with my questions about cave diving and training. I'm scheduled to begin my training with GDI (Rick Murcar) in a few weeks, and have communicated with some of his former students who have each provided a wealth of insight into the course, their personal experiences, and helpful hints on how to stay on Rick's good side, :D Thanks to Jeff Toorish, H2Andy, Scubafool, and Gilless. you guys have been great!!!

I have to say, that I'm impressed by how many people have taken the time out of their busy days to share this info with me. Add to that the people I've talked to at dive shops, and out at the various dive sites, and it is clear that there are tons of helpful, supportive, people out there who are more than willing to welcome new members to the cave diving community.

Of course it goes without saying that Rick has been awesome. True to his posts here on SB, he is a wealth of information, encourages questions and doesn't hold back with his knowledge and experience. Heck, I haven't even started the training with him, but feel like I've known him for quite some time through our phone and email discussions.

To all of these people, Thank You, Thanks, Cheers, Merci, Gracias, Danke, Mahalo, Arigato, Grazie.

On the other hand, I sent my Cavern instructor a message through Facebook, asking about his cave training, insights, etc., and got the following response:

"Sorry Don, I don't think I can help you with the information you're looking for. If you do however have questions still, please feel fre to contact me through my place of business at xxx at 555-1234 or xxx@xxx.com. But I would prefer my personal contact methods (facebook, myspace...) be reserved for personal contacts, and work related business stay at work."

Now, considering the guy isn't a cave instructor and that the place he works doesn't offer cave training, my questions were purely about his personal experience. Talk about BS, and I told him as much. I mentioned that of the people I had communicated with, he was the only one to give me such a BS answer. I also mentioned that many of the others were also instructors (albeit not Cave instructors) and yet each of them was helpful.

And so I get more of the same:

"I'm not sure what BS answer you're talking about, I didn' give you any answer. You right I'm not a cave instructor, and because of that, the liability of giving you the wrong idea about what your cave course may or may not be, isn't something I willing to accept. And since it looks like you have plenty of other instructors to contact, I don't see any reason for you to have to contact me again."

Keep in mind that this was the guy that did my Cavern ceritification, and I spent a decent chuck of change at his dive center diving on dive trips and doing other training. Talk about having a VERY bad taste in your mouth. So here's a big Thanks for Nothing for that!!

Good luck on your training. Be sure and post an update so the rest of us can learn from your ongoing experiences.

As far as your former instructor, just move on and don't look back. You're clearly with a much better instructor now. I've also experienced several poor instructors and it's like night and day when you finally end up with a good one. Enjoy your training with Rick!

On one hand, I can see where the guy is coming from. Some people like to separate business and pleasure, which is fine. I think he could have been a little less abrasive in his response, but at least you now know where you stand w/ him.

That being said, I would suggest doing at least a cavern refresher w/ your new cave instructor. The reason being that taking (I assume) a PADI or equivalent cavern course from a non-cave instructor will likely not focus on the same skills that are expected on an intro diver. For example, you probably learned how to run a reel but not the way a caver would be expected to run it. You probably didn't do air-sharing on a long hose, ok'ing the line, learning how to exit the cave w/ lights out using touch contact or bump-and-go. Maybe you did, I wasn't there. But if not, it would definitely be worth the time to learn these drills in sight of the exit. This will also give your instructor a chance to check your technique and address any gaps before you go into the cave.

Just my $.02, take it or leave it. But as a newly certified intro diver, I would definitely recommend this approach. Or at least get your instructor clued into how you were trained in cavern. Good luck in training! It's a blast, it's addicting, and your financial well-being will be put at risk once the new toys and travel start coming in :)

I would certainly think that Rick would do some OW stuff before taking a student new to him into the cave. In fact, I can't imagine that he wouldn't.

What you get from a PADI cavern course may depend on the instructor -- I know at least one PADI cavern instructor who is an avid and active cave diver, and I'd be willing to bet that the cavern class he teaches would follow seamlessly into somebody else's Intro class.

Yes, Rick and I have discussed that we'll review my Cavern skills so that he can get a good assessment of where I'm at.

I will say that I feel I got some decent cavern instruction (we did do long hose air sharing, found my way out of the cavern with no mask (eyes closed due to contacts) ok'ing the line, we did touch contact out of the cavern, etc) With that said, I'm sure I still have plenty more to learn, and I'm sure that Rick is the guy who will get me there.

Again, thanks for the thoughts and suggestions. I'll definitely post about the experience, but I'm thinking I have way more to learn from you guys then you do from anything I could share.

Good to hear. Sounds like you have your bases covered. Good luck w/ the training and be sure to give a full report when you come back.

TS&M- He did state that his cavern instructor was not cave certified, which is why I suggested the audit. I'm sure there are some good PADI cavern instructors out there. For someone who plans to stay in the caverns I am sure that is fine but if they plan of going further you will get more from an instructor that gears the class towards the skills needed for caving. Again, it looks like this has been covered off so the point is moot.

IMO, his 1st quote to you "Sorry Don, I don't think I can help you with the information you're looking for. If you do however have questions still, please feel fre to contact me through my place of business at xxx at 555-1234 or xxx@xxx.com. IMO, you dropped the ball & didn't contact him, after all he left the door wide open..If it were me, I would have called him, very simple....At what point did you not understand "If you do however have questions still, please feel fre to contact me through my place of business"........I would not take it all so personally, to some people their private, off hour time is very precious to them.......Good luck in your future diving, it will all work out, probably......

Don't know how long ago he took his class but according to new standards PADI instructrs who teach cavern must now be full cave certified. Not cave instructor but hold full cave rating. Instructor must also be in full cave gear. Doubles, long hose, lines, reels, back up lights etc..

Just to clarify, my cavern instructor was not a cave instructor, but was full cave certified, and taught the class in full cave gear.
