CO exposure is certainly a possibility for such an experience, and there is only one way to know if tank air is safe. Well, I can't think of any other possibility for that description really. Motion sickness would work differently.Whenever I dived, I got headaches, was nauseated, and even vomited. It stopped when I stopped diving and I felt better.
You don't have to be overseas to be at risk in a hotel. CO alarms are rare in US hotels, but they generally have methane or propane water heaters, etc. At Least 1 Dead, 11 Poisoned in Carbon Monoxide Leak at Michigan Hotel Poolwill also use it in hotel rooms overseas.
