Leejnd:

I fish this lake several times a year over the last 20 years. I know about every inch of the place. Very soft bottom, tons of rotting vegetation on the bottom, rocky in some sppts, etc. Small lake, not real deep - vis I'm sure wasn't very good. I also know a lot of the locals, the marina owners, lots of town folk.

This is very sad indeed - for the man's family and friends as well as the town.

dang, he had two small children ... just not a good thing

My thoughts and best wishes for all involved. It is sad to see a friend of mine knew him, it is so hard to lose a friend.

Very sad...condolences to the family..:(

I'm truly shocked and saddened. I knew Mike for close to two years -- was in his shop for fills all the time. I saw him just a couple of weekends ago, and he was ever the proud father. Very excited about the recent birth of his (second) daughter. I logged in to SB as I was getting ready to leave work today and saw this thread. When I read the name in the newspaper link, I couldn't believe it. It was surreal. Still is. My condolences go out to his family and friends. Very sad.

This is almost incomprehensible!

We met via Ron Edmunsen, LA Co/NAUI Instructor when he Mike first opened Channel Islands scuba in Ventura. My wife had relocated to Pismo Beach from OC and I was in the process of closing down my practice --which took me 7 years.

During this communter period of my life I would stop at Channel Islands Scuba for a visit, a cup or if the time was late often a meal with Mike and often as not Ron. I remember so well one of the last long visits when he had become engaged and all the ribbing we gave him about married life. I recall so well that I kidded him that I had spoke to his future wife (I never met or spoke to her) and she had said that after marriage she would allow "Mike go diving any time he wanted so long as it wasn't over five miles from home and in water over 5 foot deep." This statement set the tone for the evenings pre marriage ribbing.

I relocated and only had rare opportunities to stop for a chat and a catch up.

He was a friend ....

I will always recall Mike with fond memories of times past ...

Very sad... condolences to the family.

I guess even the best divers can have a lapse in judgment... diving those waters without a line wasn't the safest choice, it seems, nor was cutting it so close on air.

I wonder what sort of lighting they had, since there were so many references to it being extremely dark?

It's always sad to hear about the loss of one of our fellow divers.

My condolences go out to family and friends.

I am so stunned, I cannot believe this. I sat in the dive shop just two weeks ago, talking shop and about the upcoming trip to Palau. I just completed my drysuit certification class last month with Mike. Rest in peace Mike.

I feel so very sad for his wife and daughters. My deepest condolences for them.
