This will be a A group from the Alpena area will be traveling to Tawas on Saturday to do a shallow water dive of the old lumber mill site. This area is generally in less than ten feet of water, somewhat protected and should be a good dive if the weather holds out.
The group from Alpena will be leaving at 8am and traveling to the DNR boat launch on US23 behind the State Police Post ariving around 9:30. There is a charge for parking in the boat launch parking lot. In the past the lot attendant has allowed us to drop our gear at the site and then we generally park our vehicles in the old Holiday Inn parking lot. I think it is now called the Tawas Bay Beach Resort.
I dived this site back in June with a class and we found LOTS of "stuff". Many, Many treasures! Bottles, pullies and shafts, FISH, etc. After our experience in Cheboygan last weekend we couldn't wait to get back to Tawas and do some treasure hunting.
I thought that I would get this out to you divers in Mid-Michigan because it is an easy day trip. I know that I am only planning on one dive for myself due to aother engagment but if the diving is good, I am sure people will stick around if the air holds out.
As for the weather? For a couple of these folks, I know that only lightning cancels.
There is NO AIR available that I know of in the Tawas area. If you need rental gear, I am sure that if you called Thunder Bay Scuba in Alpena you may be able to have rental tanks, etc. meet you at Tawas.
You may even want to hang around and see where we end up on Sunday. We have a couple of ideas but most likely won't decide until we get together on Saturday.
