My other thread inspired me to learn about Taveuni. It looks like my paradise! I want to see if I can afford to go within the next 2 weeks and need suggestions on how to make it all happen and with reasonable rates (meaning not the most expensive, and not sleeping in tents).

I’d like to dive a lot but also explore the jungles and waterfalls, maybe 10-14 days.

Fiji/Taveuni is a paradise and you should go someday. However, it is not going to be reasonably affordable as a last minute destination from HNL in the next 2 weeks.

For accommodations and diving, check out Nakia Resort and their dive operation Taveuni Ocean Sports. Both are affordable if you can find decent air fare. The TripAdvisor reports are accurate. We have been their four times and it is simply paradise.

I had the opportunity to visit Fiji as part of a conference my wife is attending in Auckland. . .

You'll fly into the main island (Viti Levu) and Tavauni is on Vanua Levu (another airplane trip). Baggage is a bitch on Fiji and flights and dragging and paying to get my dive gear there ended up being too expensive. I'm staying in the Northern part of Viti Levu near the Volivoli resort (Dreamview Villa on Fiji's Stunning Suncoast. Re-opening 1st Nov 2017. UPDATED 2018 - TripAdvisor - Rakiraki Vacation Rental) The diving in the Bligh Straits (yes that Captain Bligh) is supposed to be equivalent to Taviuni.

There is more to do on the "big" island, a couple of waterfalls look spectacular

Disclaimer: All of this is research, I don't leave until late August this year.

Tavoru falls in Bouma Natl park on Taveuni is good. My SB avatar is one I took when there. I don't know what your budget is and we did not do a budget trip (we were nearby Taveuni) but we looked at Garden Island resort before and when we were in Taveuni. It looked nice and there website has some package prices that don't look too bad. I'm sure there are others. Airfare is a different story. The days of last minute low prices are generally a thing of the past but you never know. I recall that Honolulu had flights direct to Fiji.
You will fly into Nadi on Viti Levu and then onto Taveuni which is separate from Vanua Levu. Watch the extra charges for baggage on inter-island flights. If the flight is not full they may not charge but it can also depend on the mood of the gate agent. Be prepared to pay in case.
Diving is more expensive than say, Mexico but maybe a package helps out.
I don't know if you can do this last minute and cheaply but all our last minute trips started with an airfare search with a hold (if they let you) then book hotel and diving. Off we went. We bought our inter island air tickets in advance. You might try a local agent or contact them directly first. If they are full then nothing else matters. Some last minute trips did blow up for us so reschedules had to be done.
good luck

Airfare to Fiji (NAN) is $900. I’d be happy if I could keep the basics (flight, lodging, and diving) to around $3000. I think it can be close. I don’t know if it’s better to try to book a package or the dives separately though.

I can't offer any advice about Fiji (I'm sad to say!) but I wanted to mention a few things that you should take into consideration when shopping for a dive vacation in many places around the world. You haven't stated if you will be traveling alone or with a companion, but your budget suggests that you will be traveling as a single diver.

Often when you see prices listed for a resort/LOB/dive package they are per person and based on double occupancy - and there may be a significant upcharge for single occupancy. That's not always true but it is something to confirm when you are pricing various options.

Also, when you are looking at places with bargain prices - anywhere in the tropics - the reason that the price is low may be because they don't have air conditioning. If the description includes info about the ceiling fans and cooling breezes, they probably don't have AC.

Since you live in the tropics perhaps you are used to the heat and you don't need AC (?) but it's a deal-breaker for me - especially when the location has a lot of mosquitos and/or other biting insects.

We once stayed in a charming place without AC on a remote tropical island. There was mosquito netting suspended over the bed - how quaint! It didn't work very well at keeping out the insects but it sure kept out those cooling breezes! After that trip the AC requirement became mandatory for all of our tropical vacations.

Also, when the ads and travel brochures refer to the reefs as "great for macrophotography" that may mean that the site has been overfished and there isn't an abundance of life on the reefs.

And sometimes there are hidden fees and extras, like resort fees, taxes, transfers, service charges, etc. Find out what's included and what's extra and make sure that you are comparing apples to apples.

Be aware that sometimes there are currency conversion fees and make sure that your credit card doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

And sometimes it can be hard to get to a destination, even if you are traveling from a hub airport and your destination isn't very far away. That can add expense and cut into your vacation and dive time.

For example, when we went to Dominica we were traveling from Chicago to a Caribbean island - not all that far away - but we had to overnight in hotels in Puerto Rico both on the way down and when coming home - because there just aren't many flights to Dominica available!

Another good question to ask is "how long are the boat rides out to the reef?" You can spend a lot of your precious vacation time traveling to and from the reef - and maybe even getting seasick if you are like me!

I don't mean to sound like a Debbie Downer, but we learned these lessons the hard way and I just wanted to give you a heads up - sometimes a bargain isn't really that much of a bargain.

But I don't want to scare anyone away from traveling. We always had a great time when we were learning these lessons, but we have gotten a little more picky about our travel decisions over time - I just wanted to share a few tips!

Good luck!

Thanks Kathy! There’s certainly a lot to consider which makes this ‘last minute’ thing pretty tough! I’m not too concerned about the weather - Taveuni is around 72F and the main island is similar to here, albeit maybe a bit more humid.

I’m thinking of booking something like the Maravu Taveuni Lodge (‘traditional style Bure”) and booking dives separately with Taveuni Ocean Sports. Maybe I’ll send TOS an email...

Best of luck!

One last piece of unsolicited advice, since you live in the US you will probably need to bring power adapters and converters with you to Fiji, see the link below. I have never been there but one time I traveled to Seoul, S. Korea and I didn't bring adapters or a converter and that was a big mistake.

I thought that I had investigated the destination thoroughly and that I was well-prepared but I was wrong because none of my rectangular plugs fit into the circular sockets and the power could damage my devices without using a converter!
