Heading to Tobermory this summer from Ohio. What's the scoop on taking tanks, full or empty across the border? Any experiences to share?

TIA!!

Lori

I have taken them over...no problems....and then one time I had to empty them, screw the valves off so custom could inspect them.

I bring tanks back and forth to Canada on a regular interval. Try using the ferry in Marine City. Just a more relaxed environment. Remember you will need your passport this summer.

Mostly no problem, you are more likely to be harrassed returning, however just empty the tank and screw off the valve - they will look in and you will be on your way. Has only happened to me once.

Last summer I took 4 sets of doubles, 8 stage bottles (4 80's and 4 40's) and a T-bottle of oxygen. Nary a word, both ways. The charter operator I was diving with does it every year with considerably more tanks/equipment without any problems.

If you are travelling by ferry make sure you declare nitrox filled tanks as oxygen, not nitrox. There is a Dangerous Goods bullitin that for some reason groups nitrox with other dangerous oxidants and lists it as a prohibited item.
I just say oxygen and there is no issue with that.

I cross the border up in Sault Ste. Marie with full tanks all the time, and I usually get either weird looks (it's snowing, and you have scuba tanks?!) or get the Customs agent who also dives, and asks questions looking for new dive sites.

However, the way northern border is a bit more relaxed than those further south.

We've not had any problems either way. Had them ask how much the gear was worth and if we were bringing it back but that's about it. Coming home one year they wanted to inspect the bed of the truck. The guy opened the tailgate and got one whiff of the still damp gear that made him step back (you could smell it in the cab when he opened it), he closed the tailgate and sent us on our way :D

Last year I was certain we would get searched because we were doing what I thought were suspicious things in line but they never said a thing. Our friends were behind us and he ran up to the truck to give me his thumb drive so I could copy pictures to it while we waited then I ran it back to him when we were only a couple cars back from the agent's cubicle.
