I used Protec Tulum for cave diving when I was there last fall. They could rent you anything you need, and you could have a locker on site to store your gear. The locker has electricity, so you can charge your lights. I was very satisfied with them.

We did run into a problem being allowed to dive some caves without a guide. That includes especially the Dos Ojos area caves, including Pet Cemetery. At that area, the people were quite insistent that within months, ALL cave diving in the Yucatan would require a professional guide. I have not paid any attention since then, but I don't think that has happened.

Sorry Cameron, deposit or no, we will not rent gear if we are not there. Only snorkeling gear. Sorry for that, but when we agreed for a time to have our weights back they were not there, and next day they still were not there. And then we needed to borrow weights. And twice the weights were not returned at all, and we still have their passport. Useless though.

And if you want to go elsewhere, enjoy the dives. I know where I am going in October.

Weights are more of a problem than tanks. It seems simple. Require a large enough deposit so that if the tank or weights don't come back you made a great sale. And charge enough for the rental that it it is a money maker. Problem is, if people start diving on their own the dive shops lose the $75-100 dollars they charge for each 2 dives.

I am on very good terms with the Greek guy who owns the air fill place so he doesn't require any deposit from me. I would be happy to give a big enough deposit to more than cover the cost of the tanks. At Meridiano in Cozumel they really don't like a cash deposit. They prefer a drivers license or something like that.

You might ask some of the fishermen on the wharf in Puerto Morelos. They won't be diving this time of year but might be willing to rent or sell you some lead. One of them loans me lead to use.

Don't think I am against the dive shops and boat diving. I've spent 10's of thousands of dollars boat diving there and continue to do so. I do like to do something different and like to poke along on my own looking at the tiny stuff.

If you are going to dive with a shop, check out Tulaka in Puerto Morelos. They have a good price and they still love to dive. It is not much fun diving with people who are tired of it and only do it for the money.
