If I am not in doubles, I will carry the pony attached to the side holes of my plate, upside down. That way I can charge it and shut it down and then easily turn it on if I need it. That keeps water out of the hose (and the first stage) and eliminates any chance freeflows. It's also easier to detach underwater that way. But rigging should always be about what is comfortable for you and everyone is different.
I would rethink leaving the octopus behind. If something happens to your primary, like a ruptured hose, you won't have anything to go to and will be forced to the pony. That means all of the gas in your tank is going to be lost and you might well need it. With the octopus you can at least breath the tank down before you have to go to your pony.
I use the button spg as well. That's all you need for a pony since your are on your way to the surface if you are using it. You have what you have and it won't help to watch the pressure drop.
