Bonaire is NOT the place to develop buoyancy skills. There are already far too many inept divers smashing the reef to hell. Take them someplace that is already beat to crap to practice. There are plenty of those that offer shore diving. Take them to Coco View and let them do all their diving from shore. Go to Bonaire once they have their buoyancy and trim down. Pristine coral is NOT the place to practice.

Why not? While I agree with you that pristine reef should not be damaged, there is no reason it should be with new divers on Bonaire. There are plenty of areas that have sandy areas that can be navigated on close to the reef that are perfect for a new diver. Close enough to see it well but still over sand, It's much better than having one drop uncontrolled from a boat onto the reef, damaging the reef and worse yet hurting the diver. An easy slow drop to a shallow depth over sand with patches of coral around is the perfect place for a new diver to gain experience, there are a number of sites on Bonaire like that. This kind of reef damage is not so much a new diver problem but rather of a poor dive guide/buddy problem. Simply don't take them over the reef until their buoyancy is up to par. If they are reasonably well trained and with a good buddy, this shouldn't take long but until it does just stay in the sand.

My wife and I were planning a two week trip to Bonaire this year but have less than 30 total dives (Maui and Roatan). While we have not "mastered" our buoyancy and trim, I think we are learning quickly. From the statement above I wonder if we are welcome on Bonaire?

Kharon, can you recommend a crapy dive location for us noobs to spend our vacation?

Sorry Kharon, your statement is absurd.
We had ZERO dives on our own after getting certified in Bonaire and did not smash any coral, not even once. There are inept divers everywhere, and the idea of taking a new diver to a place that is "beat to crap" does not seem to want to inspire anyone to continue diving. Bonaire is a fabulous place for new divers, and all are welcome. Go!!

WTF.....

Basically, he/she is saying to sort out your buoyancy and beat up the reef some place he/she does not dive....

A more proper suggestion would have been to have them take a bouyancy course and get more comfortable with their skills. I'm sure Dive Friends Bonaire would be happy to do this. And then, shore dive away.

I certainly wish I had taken a bouyancy course and definitely recommend it. That would have made my diving life much easier.

Does anyone have a list of easy entry dive spots in Bonaire?
Search SB; lots of threads on this.
Read any of the several guides to diving Bonaire, for example Susan Porter's Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy.

I just checked my log: I have 304 dives in front of Buddy Dive. Haven't been bored yet. Looking forward to another bunch in a few months. Extremely easy entry and exit. How many easy-entry dive sites do you need?

Easy is a relative term. :)
Here's a few of "the easiest" to get you started:
Oil Slick
Cliff (Dive Friends @ Hamlet)
Buddy's Reef
Yellow Submarine (Dive Friends)
Dive Friends @ Dive Inn
Windsock
Tori's Reef
Pink Beach

Quite simply--Bonaire for training dives! For ease of access to diving, relatively inexpensive packages, and more. Bonaire it is. 30+ years of Caribbean travel--about 30 Bonaire visits, 6 visits to Coco View Resort on Roatan, and about 15 Cozumel trips.

From San Francisco, though; I would consider destinations in the Pacific.

But if you decide on Bonaire, I recommend Captain Don's Habitat or Buddydive next door as you would be able to do dives out front as well as boat dives. Of course there are other waterfront resorts where you could do the same. Habitat has 2br, 2 bath single story Bungalow units with very large porches and full kitchens. A grocery store is walking distance away as are several restaurants....
