when you bring a spool or reel or any other line, you should also have a cutting device for that line.
You are bringing a death trap entanglement potential so make sure your Hook knife, emt scissors or knife are up to the task.

I don't just mean wrecks that have all kinds of additional cabling or fouled nets. The entanglement potential is higher and you should try to bring an appropriate cutter (this can be difficult).

Any time you bring a spool, a cutter goes too

OK. But I wouldn't limit it to when you are carrying a line. I think of a cutting tool as required kit.

I prefer EMT (or trauma) shears. If the blades are less than 4" in length from the pivot point, they are even TSA compliant for a carry on.

So, I get what you are saying because I did get "entangled" in my own spool.

I was using my octo (inline with my BCD inflator) to inflate my surface marker. The marker went up, my line got wrapped around my inflator, and I went up with it. It happened so fast (at about 30') that I could have never reacted fast enough to pull out my knife/shears. The DM was laughing pretty hard at me, and rightfully so.

He then showed me how to inflate the sausage by tilting my head and catching the expelled air of my regulator.

I have not had a problem since.

Or just blow it up manually. Do it with one exhale and it's neutral since all the gas in the bag came out of your lungs. Hold onto it, take a few seconds to get your reg back in your mouth, make sure the spool and DSMB are free, and then let it rip.

I'll going to ask the mods if this thread should be moved to the Basic forum.

Spools, lines, dsmb should not be considered "basic"

They weren't when I started diving, but it seems like a lot of people now think deployment of a DSMB is a basic skill.

Anyway, I thought we were talking about bringing a cutting tool? That's definitely basic scuba.
