I always take my own gear. The only problem with the inter-island flight in French Polynesia is that each passenger is only allowed 20kg of luggage total (divers get 5 kg more if they show their C-card) and that includes checked and cabin luggage! We just paid the overage and rolled it into the cost of the vacation!
