I think I may be having a reaction to the mouth pieces on my regulators. I first noticed the problem on my OW in the sound. At the end of the dive my lips had bloated to at least 3 times their size and had raw spots on the inside. The swelling and rawness dissapeared in a few hours. During the dive the next day I didn't experience any problems (and I did not bit down on the mouth piece any differently). However, 3 or 4 dives down the road (in fresh water) the giant lips (and I mean commically large in size) and rawness returned (again completely going away in a few hours). I was able to determine the unique factor between both dives was that I had taken a few practice breaths off of my new AIR2. I quickly went to the dive shop (giant lips and all) and purchased a replacement mouthpiece for my AIR2. To be honest I have only done the obligatory breath test on the AIR2 since then (I'm still alittle scared of it), so I don't really know if the new mouth piece completely resolved the problem.
The reason for my post is that I think I may be having the same problem on my primary regulator, but with a much less severe reaction. My dives have typically been only about 30 minutes in length (a quick practice run down a section of the local river). Yesterday my dive was almost an hour. I noticed during the last 10 mintues of the dive that the top of my mouth was a little sore where the mouthpiece brushes against it. And at the end of my dive my boyfriend mentioned I had alittle bit of the giant lip thing going on. It was visually apparent, but not strong enough that I could sense their change in size or to attract stares from strangers. Again all syptoms were gone in a couple of hours.
Should I worry about this apparent minor reaction? The AIR2 reaction was unbearable, but the reaction to my Apex TX200 regulator only seems to occur with extended exposure and is not uncomfortable. Is it possible that my slightly swollen lips I got with the long dive yesterday was just from the length of the dive and the salt water (I have intentionally worked at not biting down on my mouth piece). If it is a reaction will it increase with repeated exposure? The reaction to the original AIR2 mouthpiece was so strong and happened with such little exposure it was apparent that something needed to be done about it. I'd appreciate nny input as to whether I should be concerned with the slight swelling?
