I think it's pretty clear I need to invest in some Miflex hoses.

From somethings I have heard, those hoses themselves are a failure point.

One reason to avoid 5 and 7 foot hoses, among many, is the extra weight and bulk given the current travel limits. Two to four feet of extra hose is just bulk and weight. Just me I realize but I am trying to pack down into a single carry on, one for me and one for my wife. Nothing extra is allowed in our minimalist travel rigs so as to reduce weight and bulk to an absolute minimum. I don't need the two to four extra feet of heavy/bulky hose to dive safely, it can therefore stay at home, just me, N <------super minimalist diver. Minimalism is not just a word I use because it sounds cool, I actually do it.

Hoses themselves a failure point? Yikes.

Luckily (or not) I do not travel so hose weight is not something I have to think about.

??? There is one on the inside of every second stage you own, where the hose attaches. Its the reason you have to have two wrenches to swap hoses

Not sure about other brands, but that's not the case on (curent/XTX) Apeks regs; my 'swivel' is on the hose, not the second stage - so only one wrench is required to swap; that's with both the original hose or the MiFlex hose I added

From somethings I have heard, those (MiFlex) hoses themselves are a failure point

Please share?

Also I still don't get how adding another joint (ie by installing an elbow) isn't adding another (potential) failure point

Not trying to start an argument, just to understand

i personally use a swivel on my xtx200 and really like it. i get really bad jaw fatigue and i think this helps me a lot. so far, no issues with it. i wouldnt put it on a tech rig, but for a rec rig, i dont see any issue with them. the apeks, and apparently some of the other swivels out there, are a bit different than the dive-rite ones, but im not exactly sure...
