Switching to bp/w, thinking about the Hog system that has the option of the soft plate, but haven't made up my mind yet. I d probably go with the 32lb wing. Or the Oms iq system. Thinking 32lb because I ve put on some weight and will be using it for some Dm work and always end up with extra weight.
Will be all warm water diving with exception of hopefully some more cenote diving, but also looking for a sidemount for that.
Anyway questions about wings, while looking at the halcyon site and watching their in water videos was noticing the taco effect. Do all wings do that? or do some have a way of securing the wing. I did notice a video showing some tabs on the diverite wings to stop that effect.
The other question is, does it matter?, it seems it would make venting air problematic at least.
Thanks

taco effects vary on the wing. a smaller, longer profile wing will taco less. those with more rigid shells like the oxycheq and apeks d series also will hold their shape better.

a small amount of tacoing is manageable, but if you go to an extreme such as using a wider doubles wing, it will make venting harder. you can also end up trapping gas on one side of the wing which can throw your trim off.

Thanks, I have noticed some wings have bungees, I had a close look at the zeagle express tech and it seems the wing had bungees wrapped around it, at least I think it was the zeagle. Also the hog system has the option of the 32lb wing with bungees. Anyway after seeing the halcyon website, it seemed very noticable and had me wondering how that works.

Just a tip, stay away from bungee, first it creates unnecessary snag risks and second it can trap air, both not good.
32 should be decent and not taco much.
While I don't have a dss rig myself, if you are in the US I would give him a call and consult, heard a lot of good.
Also, what do you mean by soft plate? Get a proper back plate for better weight distribution, either alu or steel

I recently switched to BPW; bought the HOG system; used the softplate for travel to a Caribbean live-aboard; using AL metal plate for regular Florida diving. Will likely get the SS metal plate for cold water diving when I relocate to the NW next year.

That's not "the taco effect."

I have a DSS BP/W and can confirm that a call to Tobin will answer a lot of BP/W questions.

Excess wing size means more drag and more moving bubble complications, so it is worth it to do the math and determine how much lift you actually need. If you are going to be carrying excess weight as a DM, that will of course also enter into it. For most divers 32lbs of lift is good for cold water and quite excessive for warm - but a minor issue if you will have need of the extra lift. I would suggest a hard plate unless you have a compelling need for a soft one. I consider a proper sized backplate to be more comfortable than a jacket bcd even in a swimsuit. Of course, that is my own experience and YMMV.

seconding what @Bierstadt said above, I highly recommend getting in touch with Tobin at Deep Sea Supply, he posts on here as @cool_hardware52 and is the maker of badass bp/w's. for what you are doing, the DSS wings will be longer but narrower which minimizes the taco effect without needing bungees or sacrificing lift. Personal wing is a LCD30 and I love it

How did you like the hog system, was it the one called total buoyancy control system or some damned name? Which wing did you get? How was the softplate?, I like that for traveling (which I am getting ready to do) is it fairly stable? I think I would prefer a hard plate, but may end up with both. How were the weight pocket? I ll probably end up making a simple hogarthian type harness minus any pockets, but If I teach in it I might want to dress it up a bit.
Thanks
