I can only hope for your buddy's sake that you are an overweight and slow swimming buddy.
 
Go get certified, then wear a pork chop on a string around your neck and look for this:

First of all it's easy to tell you are not serious. Anyone who has been in Miami for more the 30 minutes knows where to find an alligator.

Second, like John said, no you don't.

Third, I have dove with them before. It's not that fun.

Nope. Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park in Luraville. I have come up from a nice dive out of the cave and seen one swimming above me on a couple of occasions. You would not catch me in the Everglades. Oh, I have been in Lake Tarpon up near the Tampa area. Yeah, too many gators there as well.
 
There is a croc living in the moat at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. The penalties for swimming in the moat are severe. I suspect that if the croc is hungry, the penalties are a little more severe.
