So .. between Akumal and Tulum on the Yucatan I'm doing a safety stop over a 95 100 foot bottom mixed Sand an Coral .. sitting watching my timer and my buddy I notice a very tiny bright blue flash in front of my face.. after crossing my eyes a while I realize that this thing is about 1.5 feet in front of my mask.
It looks like nothing other than a small flec of metalic blue paint (very close to my old '71 Nova) maybe 1/8 of an inch by 3/16 ths (small is the point I'm going for here), and it is just hanging there.
So I think "ha look at that paint chip!" and I move my finger slowly to "capture" it when my finger gets close is seems to flick and just disappear... only to re appear about 6" away... woooo! That was weird!
So I try again.. this time when I get close with my finger it flicks away again this time I see it flicker a few times as it moves away from my finger .. yup it looked to be moving purposly away from me.. in a direction that was different from its first move.
So this goes beyond woo and right into whoa!:eek5: What the heck is was that! my buddy didn't see it.. and to be quite frank I don't have a hard time believing that some of the things I did when I was younger could "flash back" on me at this late date. I was really not sure I saw what I thought I saw and I almost said nothing when back in the boat.
Eventually curiosity won out and I asked the DM if he had ever seen anything like that.. he said yes he had seen them/it before but he didn't know what it was called. He did volunteer that if I ever ran into a group of them it would be one of the freakiest things I would ever see... I have no trouble at all believing that.
I've looked and looked but can't find anything like this in my books... can anyone help?
