The sensation of an "echo" in one ear "for weeks" after diving really doesn't sound much like the complaints routinely seen in simple water in the external auditory canal.
I'm not sure how the run of advice regarding prophylactic ear drops got going on a medical forum before we even have a diagnosis, but obviously it is problematic.
An echo in the ear is much more suggestive of a middle ear issue, where complaints of echo, muffled sound perception, a feeling of congestion deep within the ear, tinnitus, and the like can be common.
If I are correct, then reading this may prove useful---> http://www.scubadiving.com/training/medicine/stopearpain/
Shawn, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong or to add additional information.
Best regards.
