So I am new here. Been lurking for a couple of weeks now. I got my open water certification in Kauai a few weeks ago.. What an amazing experience. Now I purchased a Suunto Mosquito there, and it performed as asked. I actually wish I had purchased it before my last two dives, but hey.

So I get home and ordered a usb cable off ebay so that I could upload my dive information. The cable came in the other day, and I spent a couple of days trying to get the computer to connect. I am running Vista on one machine and XP on another. I tried connecting with dive manager versions 2.7, 3.0, and 3.1. Every time I would try and connect to the mosquito, the cable led would light up, and even the up and down arrow on the watch would blink, but after about 20 seconds the pc would give up and tell me that the "device cannot be found". Xp and Vista machines gave the same errors. I tried uninstalling the usb-serial device, etc. You name it, I tried it. I futzed with the serial port settings till I was blue in the face. Nothing worked.

To cut to the chase, the battery was low on the Mosquito. Now it wasn't low enough to shut it off, and it still showed two out of four bars when it did the battery check going to dive mode. Since I purchased it new, and it's a discontinued model, I will just guess that it's been sitting at the dive shop for long enough to run the battery down some. So I replaced the battery with another 2035, and bingo, it connected on the first try, and downloaded my two dives from Kauai.

If you have a connection problem with a Suunto computer I would probably start with the battery as my first check.

That works for most directly connected computers, The digital signal need to be clean high or low for it to connect.

The weird part was, it was showing 2 out of 4 bars on the battery test when you went to dive mode, and the up and down arrows were blinking in coordination with the cable when it was connected. The pc was just not finding the device, and it wasn't like it came out and said, check the battery. So I figured I would just post it as I tried changing the battery on a whim.

I haven't tested with a suunto but during data transfer I bet current goes up from µA (microampere)to mA (milliampere) during transfer and when current goes up voltages goes down.
