Gauge mode gives you depth and time, and nothing else -- In other words, it doesn't track or display NDL time remaining. It's useful for people who want to manage their own profiles, and for people who are doing decompression diving. I like it because it puts the dive time in the biggest numbers, right in the middle of the screen, and displays seconds, which makes it easier to time stops.

Bismarck, you can run the Mosquito in computer mode, and it will serve as a backup bottom timer/depth gauge. You just ignore the NDL information, and as long as you are diving reasonable profiles and remember to set it for the gas you are using (which I forget to do) it's unlikely you will put it into deco, and if you do, your minimum deco ascent should clear it.

Hi lynne,

I like those big numbers! I don't need the NDL info (dark side) and it is a shame to waste all that space. Gotta love the big letters on the Vytec and the reset feature also. Great for timing ascents and deco. I think I can trade my mosquito for a D-3 which won't give me the problems. BTW, congrats on on your husbands latest achievement. I am still trying to convince my wife, albeit ever so cautiously........

Bismark (no "c", just like the donut I think, not like the chancelor, or warship:) )

Hey Bismarck,
vicdiver656 here. I am one of the students of Kidspot's that he was talking to you about and I was just wondering if you could respond privately to me and just talk about diving and let me know where you live and see if we could get together when I get home to North Saanich.

Thanx.:D

A really good cheap computer is the Mares M1. It has easy accesibility and works for all forms of nitrox up to 40 and has a clock, infrared port for a computer adapter, bottom timer, depth gauge, gauge mode for air or nitrox, and many other nice and extremely useful functions

great, thanks, I just downloaded it and found the reference to no free dives past 5 minutes or so. Not going to make much of a bottom timer:)

Agreed. I gave my wife my Mosquito, because she's non-technical and likes the computer. She doesn't need a gauge mode.

I use a Suunto D3 bottom timer. Physically, its almost identical to a Mosquito. It costs less, and makes a nice timer.

Your other option is to upgrade to a more capable computer, then use it in gauge mode. In addition to the D3, I wear a D6 set in gauge mode. It doesn't lockup after 5 minutes.

I don't recommend that approach, unless there are times when you want a computer. In my case, I like to have a computer whenever I'm escorting divers or working with students, preferably one that is running the same algorithm as their computers. Most of our students buy Suunto, so I use them. That works out well because I'm very pleased with the equipment.

I also like it because I can answer "yes" when the DM on the Carribean boats ask whether I've got a computer.
