I have an old serial interface and of course, my new computer lacks a serial port. What kind of adapter do I need to keep my old interface. I heard there are adapters and converters and that it's not the same device at all. (not the same price also). Does anyone have a suggestion on what would do the job? Any brands recommended?

Thanks

I have a cobra 3 and downloaded the software from the Suunto website. Installed the software, as I recall it searched for the port and found it. Anyway I didn't have any problems and everything works. I am also using XP. Is Windows 7 really as good as I have heard?

If you have a serial port Suunto adapter, all you'll need is a USB-serial 'dongle'. They're cheap and should be easy to find. The only thing to keep in mind is that if you plug it into a different USB port, it'll be configured as a different com port, so for sanity sake keep using the same port.

EDIT: While there are many brands of adapters, I only know of two manufacturers of the chipsets. I have several Belkin USB-serial adapters (for my telescopes) and haven't experienced any problems with them.

Windows 7 is a pretty good operating system, at least among those offered by Microsoft. Whether it's worth upgrading really depends on what you use your computer for. It's an upgrade over Vista, that's for certain.

It does matter if the serial upload is slower. The serial ports were much slower than the current USB ports and I'm not sure if the converted serial ports works at serial or USB speed.

When I connect my Vyper to the PC is has to upload all the dives even if all I want is the last one or two. The process works but it's unnecessarily slow.

Adam

My Oceanic Veo does the same thing. And then I get to select the dives that I want to save.
