Ok, Here's what happened.
Suunto got tired of other people producing download cables for their dive computers. Suunto wants to be the only supplier of cables, at $100 apiece it's easy to see why!!
They did what they did with the Gekko. They simply check the "USB Device Info" in the USB to UART Bridge chip that runs the USB cable. If it doesn't say "SUUNTO USB Device" they claim they can't find the device.
They can see the divecomputer fine! It's just not their cable so SDM aborts. The after market cables have IDs like "Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge", or something similar. This is in firmware and can't be changed.
This was implemented in SDM V3.1 (perhaps as early as 3.0)

I have a generic cable from Ebay and it works fine with my old Vyper and SDM v3.1. So it must also be something to do with the dive computer.
