RPanick once bubbled...
Given the notoriously slow sample time on the guages, it may be that moving your arm simply doesn't happen far enough in the sample period for it to trigger.
...
Even at 10 second sample intervals its annoying.

Are you sure you're not getting confused with logging sample times? I have my Stinger set to a 10 second sample time, but on a fast descent, it will update the depth display every couple of seconds.

On an ascent, the speed indicator will also change between 0,1 and 2 bars more often than once every ten seconds.

Thinking about it, if the computers guage sample time (not logging sample time) was only 10 seconds, you could do a lot of damage before the ascent alarm started nagging at you...

froop once bubbled...
but on a fast descent, it will update the depth display every couple of seconds.

Froop is right the depth and tank pressure are measure much more frequently - in fact in 1 second intervals - according to Suunto. From their manual:

3.3.3. CYLINDER PRESSURE DATA
...
The change in your air consumption will be based on
constant one second interval pressure measurements
over 30 - 60 second periods.
MAX...
now that was for pressure ... the depth is not spelled out as straighforwardly instead it says:

Now the depth alarm indicator only sounds when you get 5 segments on the display to light up - and the segments light up according to this table:
No segments = Below 13 ft/min
one segment = 13-20 ft/min
two segments = 20-26 ft/min
three segments = 26-33 ft/min
four segments = 33-39 ft/min
five (the slow) segments (accompanied by Stop sign blinking depth reading and audible alarm) = Above 39 ft/min OR continously Above 33ft/min

and the manual continues...
When the maximum allowed ascent rate is exceeded, the fifth SLOW warning
segment and the STOP sign appear and the depth reading starts to blink,
indicating that the maximum ascent rate has been exceeded continuously or
that the current ascent rate is significantly above the allowed rate.
Whenever the SLOW warning segment and the STOP sign appear (Fig. 3.13.),
you should immediately slow down your ascent.
...

as you can see it is twice as conservative as we recommend - or 1/2 foot per second vs 1 foot per second.

Anyway waving your arm up and down with the Cobra in your hand won't likely fool it.

Let me add one more vote to the "never had a problem" list. Unless your arms are long enough that you walk on your knuckles moving the computer from your waist to a comfortable viewing position will not set the alarm off.

Hmmm, only one poster seemed to note a problem here, maybe now we know why.
