The neoprene a surf suit is made of probably isn't the best to use for diving. More likely than not it'll compress a lot easier than a "good" wetsuit, losing insulative properties.
Any neoprene goes through a period where the bubbles tend to collapse after a bunch of deeper diving. The good old "Rubatex" is much more compression resistant & will stand up to the repeated squishings better.
The "super stretch" material compresses a lot easier too. Some folks think the trade-off for comfort is worth it, though the mfgrs don't like to mention it.
