For some reason Im not sure that modern regs can go for the service every 30 years plan. Ill continue to do mine every 3-5 years weather they need it or not.

I love it ! -

From the Conshelf manual -

Scheduled Service

If the regulator is subjected to less than 50 dives per year, it is permissible to overhaul it every other year with an inspection procedure being performed on the “off” years. For example:

general guidelines
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yr 1 Inspection
Yr 2 Overhaul
Yr 3 Inspection
Yr 4 Overhaul, and so on.

Both Inspections and Overhauls need to be documented in the Annual Service & Inspection Record in the back of the Owner’s Manual to keep the Limited Lifetime Warranty in effect. If a regulator is subjected to more than 50 dives per year, it should receive the complete overhaul.

So I think you have saved your monies worth on servicing :)

Phil.

Jim,
When you get around to servicing the reg, be sure to let us know what you find. I suspect you are right, it's the balance chamber oring.

Who inspects THE SAME O-ring for 37 years and does not replace it and then dives it to 85 ft without redundancy?

I would think removal and inspection of the O-ring would cause wear and it is hard to believe that some sort of degradation was not evident after a few decades.

Also, if the O-ring can fail catastrophically - even when inspected - then why inspect it... just check the IP and dive?

I need to say.. When i say I cleaned and inspected it... I did not open up the High pressure side of the first stage.. I removed the filter to check for corrosion and re-install.. I would do a IP check and check the fluid in the sealed environmental chamber... On the second stages I would open them and check for sand / corrosion ... the second stage had a new diaphragm 2 years ago and the seat flipped...

This has been a test I wanted to do, The only way to know how long something can go without failing is to see how long till it fails in real world use... This was the 24th dive of this trip... I'm very confident in my diving and don't feel that I was in anyway tempting death... And the dives on this regulator set were no deeper then 120'... My wife's conshelf XIV set had been rebuilt from day one.... Her first stage is on a 5 yr rebuild cycle and her second stages are just fine..

Jim...

I was just sitting on the porch drinking a coffee and was thinking... I think I'll ship the first stage to Luis H or Herman to do the inspection and overhaul.. They will learn a lot more from the chance to inspect it then I will...

That is theory I use, pull it apart if the IP looks off. If I'm in there looking I might as well change the o-ring, it isn't like it's expensive to replace, and it saves pulling it apart later if it fails..

I'm curious to learn why it failed..

Setting here thinking about the reg, I have changed my mind about a defective balance chamber oring being the cause of the failure...the passage that it would open up is small and while it would free flow, I'm not too sure it would be a violent one since there is not much of a passage for the air to flow through. Next chance I get, I'm going to remove the oring from a reg and see what happens out of curiosity. The other possibilities are a delaminated HP stage (nylon separated from the metal carrier) or a broken spring. If it is the spring, then servicing it would not have mattered, it's not a normally replaced part.

It would be interesting to hear their thoughts upon disassembly.

Herman, When I get home later in the week... If you are game I'd mail you the first stage with a rebuild kit... You are far more knowledgeable then me... And " WE " as a group would learn more from this test then I could try and share..
