That’s an old Poseidon Cyclone a cold water regulator. My buddy insisted I use it on that dive instead of my SP MK 5 even though he was with me on an ice dive where he used his and I mine and survived. Something about the ice being 3ft thick and the air temp single digits concerned him. The trick is not to breath from an open piston reg on the surface at all. I spit mine out before I break the surface leaving the 2nd stage submerged, hence the snorkel. It’s attached to my mask and is more trouble to take off and put back on than leave on. That dive I didn’t use it as was trying to get that reg to freeze up so I could break my buddy’s balls by diving with my SP. Darn thing was a good reg, didn’t freeze at all and the temps were single numbers F. It was NH in Feb after all.

drysuit.jpgiceman 001.jpg ice dive 78 A.jpg single 72 SP MK5 and snorkel look close.

I was nice and cozy warm in my unisuit and stood around after the 45 min dive (only a single 72 back then) and tended line for another crazy a$$ diver that dove solo with a single 72. We had more balls then brains back in those days. If ya survived, like we did it was a great learning experience. Real world baby no net.

That's got me thinking ---- maybe I'll try the snorkel approach next time I go out and see if it helps avoid the freeflows. It can't hurt ---- unless

I have an unexpected ascent and then it might be one of those failure points when it bangs into the overhead and knocks my mask half way off.

What's an unexpected ascent? Doesn't sound too good. I'd be more concerned about hitting my head on the ice hard enough too hurt or knock me out. I can pull myself back to the hole without a mask.

Did this poor guy get his GoPro back yet? Lost his camera and had his thread hijacked!
