I've heard very good things about the Sundiver and Capt. Ray. However, when I tried to book for Santa Barbara Island in Sept., I got no response to two e-mail inquiries, the phone number I called wasn't answered and when I went to the mainland and drove to their office there was no one there!

Friends have suggested the Sundiver is a victim of its own success with plenty of bookings. Sure would like to try them.,.. of I can get a response.

if the weather holds......Paper sez partly cloudy

anyone else?

Heading to San Clemente on Saturday and Catalina on Sunday on the Sandollar.

Hoping for good viz. I read about the partly cloudy but more concerned about 20% chance of rain....boat seems to get smaller with rain.

Looking forward to a night dive or two. What time does it get dark there now? I haven't been since September.

gets dark in the 5:30 - 6:00 range.

I took the 4:00 boat over from Long Beach to Cat.

Yo Dr. Bill,

I think of myself as a good friend of Capt. Ray, having been on the Sundiver perhaps a dozen times in the past year and a quarter. But one of his idiosyncrasies is that he has yet to ever answer an email I've sent him. Not his strong point, I guess.

I've always had much better luck with the phone. Ray usually returns calls within a day or so, but if you don't hear back right away, keep trying. (Best to try on days when the calendar shows the boat isn't out.)

The boat's got phenomenally more busy in the past few months, and until the last couple of weeks he was taking charters out five days a week. But it's still my favorite boat out there (along with, say, the G.E.). I prefer his open boats to the shop charters -- they tend to be a more experienced crowd -- though even the open boats are occasionally attracting classes.

... do you mean to say you'd take the Express from Avalon to Long Beach, then ground transportation to Alamitos Bay, and then a dive boat back to west end Catalina?

Now that's what I call diving dedication!

Actually, I'm going on 11/16. Have you been on the boat before?

I've done 15-20 trips on this boat in the recent past. WIthout a doubt the best boat and the best captain. I also like TIm and the GE, but my very best diving days are on the SD

Depending on conditions of course - last summer was a challenge - Ray will put you on the very best sites he can find. None of this Rock Quarry - Isthmus Reef routine. He particulalrly likes the West End, so you will probabnly get to places you haven't been.

Ray will also drive aroundlooking for the best conditions.... and with one exeption (lobster nite dive) will not rush back to the dock. I've been home at 5... and I've been home at 8 lol... all depends. Also get 4 dives usually.

Yeah,. that was my first experience too, about a year and a half ago, so I don't think it's due to recent success... Ray's just a boat capt. lol.

I have never tried to email,.,,, or go to the office (he has an office?), but have had really good luck with the 800 # (his cell)
