I'm asking because during the summer the good local dive sites get packed, but I have a older boat that would make an idea dive boat.
Its a 16ft double hulled hourston(spelling?)
80horse with a 5 hp kicker in case the primary breaks down.
Enough tanks for a 400km range, and we'll be at most 100km from fuel.
I also have all the basics for nav/safety in it: Compass, overview charts and up close charts for all areas in the gulf islands, GPS, Fishfinder/depthsounder, redundant depth sounder, flares, pump, bailers, oars, heaving lines, running lights, strobe light, anchor etc)
In the gulf islands there are many great sites, typically shore dives in bays(I like pretty fish:D) With cabins for hot showers and sleeping.
looking at probably 4 day at a time trips, 1-2 dives a day since it only costs me in gas to get there and rent is typically 100$ for a week, so we aren't going to be cramming tons of dives into each day.
I used to stay at a cabin during the summer in a small bay that isn't in any local dive book I could find, it has all the good stuff, a sunken boat on one side, as well as a sunken dock, it has everything from little sun perch inside to big rock fish and salmon just outside, little eels, tons of different crabs, etc.

That is where I mainly want to dive.

However, most of these sites would put us 1-2 hours in a best case scenario away from hospitals etc, good conditions, no current issues etc.

A dive charter for a single day 2 dives runs 150$+.

What other gear would should we bring, I asked over in the tank forum about renting an O2 tank, we'll have decent 1st aid gear on site as well as at least 1 non diver on shore with the boat docked about 10ft from the cabin.
Any other recommended safety procedures or just any general info/tips would be great.

If you have an emergeny bad enough to need a hospital sooner than 1 to 2 hours call the Coast Guard for a chopper. I dive from my boat and most of time I am at least 4 to 6 hours from a hospital. Other than that it seems you have your bases covered

You don't need a Sat phone in the Gulf Islands, nor a EPIRB really. You are within cell phone range thoughout. VHF is better though, you didn't mention it so get one and know how to use that.

The Gulf Islands are well covered by local authorities + US and Can. Coast Guard are all pretty close by. I would recommend planning your dives conservatively relative to the currents. Do not dive current dependent sites without someone in the boat. Have and use SMBs.

You are closer to help in a boat in the Gulf Islands than if you went hiking.

If you're in the US, you may need a Coast Guard license if you're carrying "passengers for hire". Don't know about Canada, but expect it's similar...

HUH?

"If you're in the US, you may need a Coast Guard license if you're carrying "passengers for hire". Don't know about Canada, but expect it's similar..."

I would not worry about that, his boat is an "older" boat and it is 16 feet long. Whatever sort of boat it may actually be I don't think anything in the OP would lead one to believe the gentleman is carrying divers for hire therefore he does not need a captains license for his sixteen foot boat.

Pardon me i forgot, we have all 3, cell and redundant cell in waterproof bag, hardwired VHF and CB.
No passengers for hire, just my dive buddy, a guide friend of mine who is great with my boat, well trained in first aid, water rescues, navigation etc I have most of the same training but he spent the last year in school and is now certified for a lot more, plus he won't argue with free food and camping:)
he is certified as well for my boat, here in Canada we are now required to have a license just to operate a motorboat of this size.
there are also laws about what equipment must be carried such as flares, air horn etc.
Most of the dives will be out of current dives, most of the bays have narrow mouths(one is only 2M across, but takes a few hours to hike around to a point you can hit with a rock)
There is a VHF repeater close by to where we'll be most of the time.

We will also have O2 onboard.

SMB's Going to get some and some practice, I'm going to talk the LDS about that next week, thanks!
