Hi all. I'm looking for advice on warmth for diving Monterey. I was wondering if a well-sealed 3mm suit with a 3mm shorty over it would be enough warmth. Anyone try this type of layering? The other alternative might be the 3mm with another 3mm over it. I wanted to try this because my 3mm fits so well, and I believe the layering over a well-sealed suit would be a good alternative to a single thick suit. Opinions please?

Water's about 51F at the moment.

I'm fairly cold tolerant (when diving wet my buddies usually get cold before I do), and I used a 7mm "semi-dry" (actually just a wetsuit with wrist and neck seals), and I would still get cold. Layered 3mm suits probably wouldn't be a great idea.

Personally I dive dry, but I'd expect you'd want at least 7mm one piece, and probably either a hooded vest on top of that or a jacket and john to be comfortable diving wet, given the water temperature right now (It was 52 degrees Sunday).

I use a 6.5 farmer john and jacket and I got a little chilly last monday. You can try your 3 mil stuff, but you will NOT be comfortable.

From what I saw on the news last night Monterey has a real infestation right now. :D

Yea the sea lion population has gone nuts at breakwater. Here is a site with a few pics on the sea lion infestaton from another board. I cant recall the name of the author of this picture or i would post it.

I currently dive a drysuit and couldnt handle anything lighter than a 1 pc 7mm. As scubaroo said 51 deg on the surface is cold........Brrrrrrrrrrr:D

I dove there last spring and with a dry suit I was comfortable. That makes sense. What the real problem would have been was top side. Frequently, the weather changes from fog to rain to sunshine and then back to wind and rain all on a single trip. The dry suit kept me comfortable while the rest of the divers in wetsuits were miserable.

The diving in Monterey is like no where else. To really enjoy it you need to be warm both in and out of the water.

My dad uses a 7mm. Henderson Hyperstretch with the hyperstretch vest for Monterey diving. It's apparently extremely warm. :)

vicious, vile, man-eating, beasts. If one ever gets close enough to me again, I'm going to kill it with my shears!

So you're saying it's a tad on the cool side...
Thanks for the advice all!
