I lost my float / flag early Saturday AM while diving 40 steps in Nahant. Anyone that was diving on Saturday already knows it was a tough day in terms of current and surge.

Anyway, my dumb question. When I surfaced, my float was taking off for open ocean at a really good clip. Eventually, I would imagine that someone noticed it and also noticed that there was no diver. Should I have notified anyone? I would hate to think that anybody might have been even a tiny bit concerned and possibly even wasted time looking for a diver that wasn't there.

BTW, if anyone came across a dive flag (yellow float with a flag held together by surgical tape), it belongs to me. The tide was shifting just when I was leaving... so you never know.

Hmmmm... good question.

WILSON!!!!!! I'M SORRY WILSON!!!!

Now you know how Tom Hanks felt in the movie Castaway. Well sorry about you loss but I foun a message in a bottle at Weekapaug RI from Montauk LI so you never know were it will end. Have you posted this message in the European diving group ;)

I hope you get it back and please don't mind my strange sense of humor.

A call to the local authorities wouldn't have hurt... Would prevent someone from wondering if it was ever found..

We have given a courtesy call before to the Coast Guard or the harbormaster when a flag is adrift. It's probaly not a big deal if it heads straight out to sea, however if it bobs along the shoreline for a while people are going to wonder if someone is under it.
