I'm late to the party, and this is a page one kind of answer, but here's my thoughts.
When I'm hanging mid-water, without a real visual reference and I have a task, if I'm dialed in (which I'm not always, that's for sure) I get this weird kind of mental detachment from the task - as if one of me is calmly hanging, and watching the other me do the task, like shooting the bag.
It's hard to explain, but I really do feel removed from the task, as if I'm just watching, which allows me to stay focused and relaxed on staying in one place. The most difficult task for me to do this with is a valve drill. And I can tell when I'm in the zone because I stay perfectly still in one place, and when I'm not in the zone, I start motoring a bit while I'll I'm turning the valve.
It's hard to explain how the total detachment feels, but when I'm doing it, it's obvious, and makes the tasks so much easier.
