I will be upgrading my camera soon to a G11 or S90 with a Canon housing. I've not used an external stobe previously but would like to start doing so. What recommendations would folks have for a compatible strobe at a price consistent with the primary system?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Good diving, Craig

Inon D2000 or S2000.

I second the S2000. very small, very light, great strobe.

The Sea and Sea YS-110a works well with the G-10 and G-11.
You have ttl when in Av and Tv mode, but Manual mode works the best. You have lots of control in Manual mode on the camera and strobe..

I'm using a Heinrichs-Weikamp Digital Adapter 2 ($135 USD) Nikon Option that connects my old Ikelite Substrobes 50 & 300. I shoot mostly in manual exposure mode with my Canon S80 so the analog strobe needs to just flash once at the time of the shutter opening. Nothing fancy but the adapter's logic has TTL. You can reconfig the digital adapter with a magnet while underwater to shoot in Auto/programmed/TV/AV modes, but your internal strobe will go back to full output setting.
The real cheap starter starter strobes take 5-7 secs to recharge and could cost $185-600 up so I chose this method. It allows me to reuse my faster existing analog strobes and is a cheaper solution than a new stroble. There is the advantage on the newer strobes to allow you to switch between preflash and no preflash if you plan to shoot in NON-Manual exposure mode.

I use the Inon Z240 and am very happy with that. My son just added an Inon S2000 for his camera and we haven't used it yet, but the UPS guy just dropped it off and I have it sitting here. It is very light and compact (not much bigger than an Ikelite PCa light) and at under $500.00 I think a good price and a great match with a compact camera.

It's so cute, I might need to switch strobes.

No offense to the Ike guy, but the S2000, compared to the D51, offers more power, better coverage, twice the number of flashes on a set of batteries, substantially faster recycle time between shots and although only a bit smaller, it weighs half as much above water and only slightly more in water as the DS51. I also don't think the Ike will do TTL (if you care) on a Canon housing.

But the Inon will do sTTL with the Canon cameras.
