Whatever works for you. You can use a bong for all I care. I prefer stainless steel.

:D I'm finding it way easier with a free shaft. Dead meat. :D

Thanks I think the picture say's it all. Now I can get rid of the sack of rocks I was collecting for my first hunting trip.

Ya'll ain't right.....I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair.

I'm a fisherwoman, for sure....but, haven't done spearing yet....looking for an instructor.....all of my catches have been from a boat.

You guys make me laugh....I love it!!!!!

Big Hugs~

phoneman:
I have read in some of the posts here the term stoning? Could anyone explain it to me? I'm new to diving and have no experience with spear fishing but hope to give it a try when I'm a little more experienced as a diver. Thanks
The thing that sucks about NOT stoning a fish is that they like to take your spear and shooting line and run for the nearest rockpile and start tying things in a knot. I learned the hard way that as soon as I make a shot I need to be pulling my shooting line in FAST, that way if I didn't get a good shot they don't have a chance to crawl under the rocks.

My stone rate is maybe 50%, the rest of the time I have to subdue my victims. The simplest way to do this that I've found is to get ahold of the fish, grab it over both gill covers & squeeze hard. All the blood goes through the gills, and water must pass through. By doing this you basically smother them. I've found that it generally shuts them down fast, 10 seconds or so.

Or you can use a knife or other implement to brain them. That can get interesting...

Wayward, what are you doing shooting little babies that you can grab with one hand? If I don't stone em, I have to shoot 'em again.....heh heh heh

Wayward Son:
I'm still working on finding spots with big fish.

I hear you. That's a whole 'nuther game. Saturday I shot a decent sized jack that I had to wrestle out of a hole. I pretty much stoned it but I was free shafting (still getting my range as to stop rock behind the fish to stop the spear from going through and DID shoot right through this one). With all the trembling going on, after about 10 minutes I looked up and there were about 18 barracudas looking for a freebie. One was almost 6 feet long. I pointed at it more out of survival instinct I believe but I didn't shoot and he moved off...nice and slow....But I wouldn't want to eat one that big anyway. what a rush though. :D
