Truck1 - Patriots Point is across the Cooper River Bridge from Charleston, S.C. You can see the whole memorial as you cross over to Mount Pleasant. It's all pretty impressive, starting with the ride over the bridge, and then on to Patriots Point Park.

The reason according to the people in charge of putting her on the bottom where they did and at that depth was so that if any ship strayed over her the bridger of the Mighty O would not do any damage to the surface ships and she would not be a hazzard to navagation.

That's what I've gathered as well because the top of the ship is at about the same depth and the top of others (i.e. Spiegel Grove), at approx. 65'.

It's just too bad the ship is so darn large (in all dimensions), that much of it is beyond normal recreational dive limits.

There's a lot of people who don't think that's "too bad" at all. :) This ship will serve as a magnificent training platform for technical divers all around the southeast. And with each level of training, a new part of the ship will open up to exploration.

I think you are confusing the USS Missouri, with the USS Arizona.

Yes,me bad, I was recovering from self induced narcosis, thank you.

I hope this works out for everyone and we get some more of these. N

Thanks Firechuk,
I was there about 15 years ago when the only nuclear powered cargo ship was there.I forgot her name.
If anyone is interested, this link is the Mighty O;s official homepage.
www.ussoriskany.com There are a lot of pics and info on her while she was in service, the museum that is open etc.
This link will answer alot of questions regarding what is open and off limits to rec divers.I know the bridge and flight deck are open. All of the galss from the bridge has been removed also. There are pics on this link also as to what is open to orient yourself before you dive.

The one thing I am waiting for is the official word from the powers that be as to how deep she is and any list etc.
And I stand corrected, the Yorktown is in SC.I dont know where I got Georgia from.

Nemrod:
What I am trying to figure is that for the last ten years most of these shops have refused to venture beyondsight of shore and now they are going to dive a wreck 23 miles from shore in 230 feet of water, OK.

Maybe next time they sink a ship for a reef maybe put it a tad more shallow, no wuss here but 150 feet is getting on down there. N

Eh... Several of the Pensacola and Gulf Shore/Orange Beach charters have been going out 20-30 miles and further for dives if you are willing to pay for the longer trips. Atleast in the last 3 years that I've been certified, I've had no problems with getting offshore, sometimes further out than the Oriskany.

Sure, you'd be hard pressed to get a Destin charter out to the Oriskany. I'd goto Pensacola or nearby Orange Beach to dive a site off Pensacola though... it just makes more sense.

Apparently, its been reefed at the depths its at to keep shipping lanes clear.

Now, if we could just get something like that off Los Angeles...*sigh* doesn't even need to be that big, a nice little frigate, say, off the backside of Anacapa island....damn, that looks like fun!
