What metal is it made of? They could be taking it to melt down and sell. Stealing metal is big business right now. There are not too many places that take metal scraps and they are usually connected to law enforcement when they feel something has been stolen (at least around here).

That's a gorgeous bell. A diver that deep has a buddy with him, if not more. I can't imgaine stealing something like that.

It's so sad that someone feels they have the right to take something that doesn't belong to them. I guess they just think they are specail and entitled to do whatever they want.

It is sad, Hope it is returned.

agreed, more of the 'me first-screw everyone else' attitude I have seen way to much of :(

I hope they find the SOB and lock him up. Since unfortunately I doubt that will happen, I hope they find him or her and give them the highest fine permissible by state and federal law, and force them to surrender it to a state official who will either return it to its rightful place or appoint someone who will. I would settle for its proper restoration and placement in a museum which would be better than having lost it all together, but before any decision could be reached, we would need to find who the hell did this. The really sad thing it, it is probably someone on this board who has seen this thread and laughed at it. Furthermore, if Guppie is correct and it was stolen for scrap (which I kind of doubt as there would be no reason for someone to dive down to that depth, steal a bell and scrap it, would probably cost them more to do that than the bell is worth), but if he (Guppie) is correct then they probably melted it down, or destroyed it and did scrap it. Which would be sad and incredibly unfortunate.

I personally do not have the training yet to be able to go to this site and see it. Which means that knowing how cool this thing is to see in a picture and knowing that I will NEVER be able to see it, is very disheartening.

Furthermore, if the person who did do this is reading this, I personally request that you either return it, or surrender it to someone who can return it and vow that you will never do it again. Hell, I would offer to meet you at an undisclosed location just about anywhere in Michigan, take custody of the bell and find someone who can and will return it to its rightful place without consequence to you. PM if you have the guts to do so.

About how big is this bell? Any descriptions of it as I will probably never get to see this?

Thanks again, and sorry for the rant. I just really don't like or appreciate people who do this crap. Best of luck to all, and I hope this has a speedy resolution.

Just to add in here, I make the same offer of meeting someone to get the bell and replace it, to the person who took the bell off the Detroit.

Again, I have not gotten the training yet to be able to go and see some of these wrecks. I am planning to get the training soon so that I can one day see all of these things, but I fear that by the time I do, everything to see will be gone. Which again is very very disheartening.

Thanks again.

I'm not sure this would be the case. I mean, after figuring in the cost of a tech dive I'm not sure they would actually make money. According to this site that I found, assuming this is a brass bell, they could get anywhere from $1.08-$1.88 per pound depending on quality and weight. I'm not a tech diver, so I dont know how much you guy's spend on equipment and air fills, but I know it's got to be more than I spend as a rec diver, and it just wouldnt be worth it to sell the thing for scrap. I'm more likely to believe it's a souvenir hunter. Still scum of course. Should they be found, I say replace the bell at the wreck with the criminals tied to it At that depth, I'm guessing they'll be around for quite a while as a reminder not to do this.:crafty:

Hello all, I was just getting curious as to the status of this whole situation. Has anyone at all heard anything? I recently spoke with some of the people involved in finding the bell missing and I learned a few things that may be interesting. Both the bells from the Gov. Smith and the other wreck mentioned (the Detroit) weigh somewhere between 150 and 250 pounds. That is somewhat of a large difference I realize, but that is an approximate quess made on the weight based on their relative size and manufacture material.

This means that not any normal person would have been able to recover such a heavy item. First off, these were deep wrecks, deep enough that only a Tech diver, or team of Tech divers would have even been able to go there. But when you factor in the weight, there would have had to have been at least a few people involved in the recovery of either of the Bells. This means that SOMEONE has to know SOMETHING about the Bell.

One other thing that has been going around lately is that there were a group of people that were working with the state and the government to officially bring up the bell, and restore it so that it could be placed in a meuseum for everyone to see. Thanks to whoever stole these bells, now nobody will be able to see them. People will have the memories who have been there already, but people like me will never be able to go and see this bell as it sat, or even in the presered state of a meuseum. My worst fear in this situation is that whoever stole the bell may have melted it down, and sold it for scrap, or broken it up and sold it for scrap. Or worse, they are hordeing it for themselves as a trophy of some sort.

I WOULD LIKE TO ASK ONCE AGAIN, IF WHOEVER HAS EITHER OF THESE BELLS WOULD LIKE TO DO THE DIVING COMMUNITY A FAVOR AND CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF HEARING THAT ARTIFACTS ARE BEING STOLEN FROM PLACES MANY PEOPLE HAVE YET TO EXPLORE, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THEM TO PLEASE CONTACT ME AND I WOULD BE WILLING TO MEET YOU IN A PUBLIC PLACE, AND TAKE TEMPORARY POSSESSION OF THE BELL AND RETURN IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO CAN RESTORE THE BELL TO ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE.

I know that the group who was working on getting permission to recover the bell for a meuseum spent a very long time and a lot of hours doing this, and many years working on getting the proper permits to do this. From what I understand they are all extremely disappointed in the events that have unfolded since this time, and they would all, as well as all the poeple who would like to see these bells, but who can not for various reasons would like to see them returned. This is why I have made the offer I have, and I will hold to it.

Bump bump
