hi I "m new to diving.. I have a blood in my phelgm after diving... Now it has been three days and I still have traces of blood in my phlegm... Is it normal? Its not a lot though...

Earlier in the dive I have a very painfull sinus squeeze and I might blow my nose preety hard to equalized it... Thanx

Hi cozmik - welcome to ScubaBoard. Actually, Scubaroo is right. You should go to a doctor just to be safe. Some good advice I got on this board was to find an ENT specialist that dives and go to her. I'm new to diving too, but occasionally my nose bleeds a little after I dive. The capillaries in your sinuses are actually quite close to the surface, and it's pretty easy to pop them if you aren't careful. I try to really concentrate on equalizing early, gently, and often, that usually works. Good luck and see you around the boards!

We generally call the stuff that comes out of your nose mucus, and the stuff you cough up phlegm. If you are coughing up blood after diving, get to a doctor. If you have a little blood in your mucus, it is most likely not a life-threatening condition, but might indicate that you have enough sinus disease to treat.

Be sure to tell us what the doctor thought. We do care...

Yeah, if you're coughing up blood, dial 9-1-1 and get to the ER as fast as possible, but I'm guessing you meant bloody snot. Not uncommon for a newbie, but for three days - worth looking into.

Hi
Ok... Its not a phlegm then.. Its frm the mucus. What I know is this.. I do not cough up blood... the mucus that has blood in it only occur in my left side of the nose.

Actually today is getting better.. for the entire day I was breathing thru my mouth and I could see that there is very little blood in my mucus. I guess its been frm my sensitive nose all the while.

Did you not see a doc today? WE have some physicians on Scubaboard, but aren't really set up to do medical exams on line.
