Hi All, as I have been reading through the tech section of the forums I have come across some very good advise as far what skills and gear one should have before heading into tech, cave, wreck or other advanced diving.

For the benefit of all divers, I was wondering though if someone would be willing to make a sticky post (if admins approve) that all divers could read so that they could know what kind of skills and gear one should have before heading into these types of diving.

The reason for my asking is that a lot of good information is scattered throughout various posts and it would be nice to have it in a nice neat sticky. I would offer to do it but since I am still mostly a dork diver, I don’t think that I am the one for the job.:D

Just a suggestion,

Thanks

I know it seems like a good idea but I think such a thread would never resolve itself since there are almost as many opinions on the subject as there are members on this board. You may have to just do the old fashioned way of slugging through old posts, talking to other like-minded divers then find an instructor who you feel is also like-minded or better yet, challenges you to do things that push your abilities to their limits.

Here's a quote from my Tech Foundations Overview...
--
You will discuss specific gear requirements with your SSI technical instructor before you purchase equipment for your course; you’ll select and configure the technical diving equipment system that is best for you and the kind of diving you want to do.
--
In other words, tech diving gear is highly variable, depending on what you want to accomplish, and its selection and configuration is almost an individual - or at least a team - project.

You can't really 'talk' about skills IMO you need to see them and work with an instructor. Otherwise you're just building wacky habits based on your perceptions of what you should be doing.

Absent a local instructor or as a supplement, this is a good place to start.

Good points rjack, rick and wedivebc, did not think about those things, hence my looking towards the more experienced divers. It was a thought.

Well, back to more reading and trying to find some more advanced / tech divers to dive with.

Thanks

The video "Intro to Tech" which was suggested in an earlier post is one of the items I have in my collection - very good video which you can literally watch over and over (I have, at least) I highly recommend it.
Another item in my "transitioning to tech" toolbox is the book "Doing it Right: The fundamentals of Better Diving" you can find it on the GUE website.
The book details alot of the thinking behind the type of equpment you will want to consider investing in. There are a few things you should keep in mind while reading the book: JJ is the CEO of Halcyon, thus he pushes the merits of that brand. Being a diver which owns a Halcyon bp/w kit, I can say that I love it... I can also say that I have never used any other brand... Take that for what it is worth, but above all, always take opinions as such: opinions.
If you are looking for a diver in you area who is well versed in tech diving you might try dirdiver.com - it is kind of a connection point between DIR divers and newbies.

Just remeber that there are other agencies out there besides GUE, NAUI, SSI and others offer excellent training as well. Do the research, and invest the time before you invest your mind and your money, pick the training that best suits YOU.

as for me, well I took both pills and washed it down with a whole pitcher of kool-aid...
