Allegro's biggest draw is for families, especially those with younger kids. The fact that they knowingly put these same families, and children, at terrible peril is unforgivable. They got very lucky that the fire started when it did with almost everyone out of their rooms. Imagine what could have resulted if it happened at night with everyone sleeping? I shudder to think.

I can put up with bad food if I have to, but when a resort cuts corners on safety (and that's putting it mildly)? Never.

Sometimes it's best to phone. I called. They reopened on November 3 and the water park is operating.

I often call a property the morning of my arrival date too, to confirm my arrangements. Sometimes it pays.
I did call and they said everything including the Kids' Club is open. But I don't totally believe it and someone here said the Kids' Club is closed. I read negative comments about the resort so want to verify with someone who's been there.

We stayed there years ago on some promotion (had to sit through a stinkin' time share presentation) when the kids were small and funds were low -- it was something like $700 for the week for all 4 of us all-inclusive. With the kid's water attractions, kids' club, and nice sandy beach entry, it fit the bill at the time. Food was cafeteria grade, but breakfast was fine, lunch adequate, and we ate a number of dinners out. Ended up having a great vacation.

We haven't stayed there in years, but I've been glad that there is at least that lower-price option -- especially for young families. In more recent years I've thought I could possibly consider staying there if a great deal came up, but with all of the safety violations and guest treatment stories that came out after the recent fire there, I'm not sure I'd be eager to stay there now (though perhaps it's like plane crashes -- safest right after when under scrutiny?).
You would think they'd learn after a fire, but this was their second fire and it seems after the first one they learned nothing. It's a very different situation from the airline industry where they are heavily scrutinized by regulators and face expensive lawsuits.

Maybe they learned that it's cheaper for them to deal with the aftermath of a fire than to take measures to prevent one.

I cannot imagine how that could be possible. It just sounds like sloppy management.

I suspect that a low level manager or supervisor was responsible for the fire suppression equipment not being maintained. I seem to remember from the early reporting after the latest fire that when inspected the equipped at the resort next door didn't work either

Yeah, emailing is a good tool. He had waited a while for an answer tho so I got him a quick one. The soft-spoken lady who answered was not very informative tho. He really wanted a personal experience, but I agree with your other statement.

Nope, or any other resort managed by the same company. And take your own Smoke & CO alarm as some of theirs didn't work, but I take one for any overnight stay anywhere.
Do you have a recommendation for a travel Smoke and CO alarm? My quick amazon search didnt give me anything that looked great for travel.

I thought about your comment, and it makes a lot of sense to bring one with you.

I looked at Walmart.com as they list several dozen combo models with sales fulfilled by outside providers, and many were only 4"x4" but the first dozen I checked were out of stock. It's peak sales season for those, but dang? I suspect a Walmart online listing problem.

Really, I just take one of my 6" diameter home combo alarms as they are lightweight and don't take much room in my luggage. I do test it after traveling in case luggage handling might harm it. It spooked an exchange student traveling with us on a recent trip.

This one from Amazon is only 4"x4". I hate that it uses AAA batteries, but it claims long battery life but it claims long battery life. Smoostart 3 in 1 Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Temperature Alarm

In the US, states generally require hotel rooms to have smoke alarms, but not CO alarms. In Mexico, it's rare to see either in a room. Both Airbnb and VRBO, which have dealt with at least 10 carbon monoxide deaths in Chile and Mexico over the past four years, urge hosts to install detectors near every sleeping area, but do not require them. Airbnb offers hosts free detectors, but in a 2018 study, public health researchers found that only 58 percent of hosts said they had installed them.

I suspect that maintenance was great right after the 2014 fire. Then after some years went by, complacency set in. And in 2020 when revenues went to zero, maintenance probably got "temporarily" deferred. But when business resumed, it was too tempting to not spend that money and keep the extra profit. After all, nothing bad happened without the maintenance in 2020. And then nothing bad happened without the maintenance in 2021. Pretty soon it starts to feel like an unnecessary expense.
