Will be touring from San Francisco to Los Angeles between Oct 14 and 23.

Would like to stop for a dive or two along the way.
Looking for any sugestions and where to dive.

Don't want to lug around all my gear. will bring boots, fins, mask, hood, computer. will leave my shortie at home. So will need to rent at each location. a shop with rental and guide.

have PADI advanced and nitrox certification

Monterey: Do a guided tour with Dan from Manta Divers.

Santa Barbara: Do a day trip to the Channel Islands with Truth Aquatics.

LA: Ask the folks in the Socal forum. I like the dive park at Casino Point on Catalina Island and the King Neptune with Scubaluv also on Catalina.

Good Luck

You really should take a boat out of Ventura Harbor and dive the Channel Islands. It is wonderful diving, and one of our recent Scuba magazines (sorry I forgot which one) had it in the top ten dive spots in the US. When we went a few weeks ago, the boat stopped at a spot where the sealions were welping their pups, and they all came out to play. Our dive was about 25 divers, and 300 sea lions. it was amazing! You can get a boat for $80 includes 3 dives, and lunch, it's hard to beat. you will need a 7 mil suit though.
We live about 30mins south of Ventura California, and our LDS is Channel Islands Scuba (805-230-9995). The owners name is Mike. They are all great people there, and could set you up w/ gear, or if you want to get it in the Ventura area, would be able to tell you who to see. Lots of people from that shop take a boat atleast weekly, so you could even find good people to dive with if you would like. You might want to check the boats out sooner rather than later, cause Oct 1 starts Lobster season, and they could fill up quick. Our DM told us Tues or Thurs are best, least crowded. We went on Friday, and even though it was a full boat, it was still nice.

I'm intrigued. Where does he take you? I'm enjoying diving Monterey but we're still playing new dive sites by ear which has led to some real hassles (lovers the first time and Coral Street yesterday) and some good ones. It'd be nice to know where to go.

He told me he will dive where and when the clients abilities permit. Dont be surprised if he asks for a checkout dive. Have fun.

The Monterey Express is a good "beginners' boat" to get to know the Monterey Bay. One of the Sacramento dive stores probably has boat dives scheduled with them. You can sign up in Sacramento.

Bruce Watkins wrote a book on Monterey dive sites. You should get a copy. You can find them in most Northern California dive stores.

I will be in monterey on vacation from Oct 18-22. If you want to get together for a beach dive or boat dive let me know. Despite my wifes protest, I am taking my gear and absolutely refuse to dive with Fred aka the "dive buddy" ;)
