Catalina hotels are costly as is taking the Catalina Cruiser back and forth from the mainland. We stayed a SeaSport Village in Avalon. Good people, diver friendly.

I visit from the mainland =)

I would think that staying on the island would save a lot of travel time. Nearly all of the hotels offer packages with the local dive ops (all both of them). It'd be a nice treat to go out on a boat from Avalon for a two-tanker in the morning, lunch, dive the park in the afternoon, dinner, then a night dive at the park. All within reasonable walking distance from your hotel.

The timing of your visit is very important in determining costs since "tourist season" will start in late June and prices go up considerably. Mid-week visits before the peak season starts can be much more reasonable.

SCUBA Luv (310-510-2350) can arrange packages with boat diving, hotel and cross channel boat transportation. I believe CDS (310-510-0330) can do the same. SCUBA Luv boat trips are almost always three tank, getting in between 4:00-6:00 PM. CDS does offer two tank trips.

Feel free to PM me for specific questions. Also, check out the Catalina Info stickie in the SoCal section.

SeaPort Village Inn had rock hard beds, but GREAT people! The Inn is VERY diver friendly...just plain friendly too. Take the Catalina express over, do some dives in the dive park, then take the King Neptune out the next day for some dives. We did that the day after I got certified a few months ago and it was GREAT! I can't wait to go back (though I think I can manage to be OK with Coz and Cayman in June).

Shaggie... last summer we hit 79 (81 and 83 on some computers) late in the season (late July/August). They're predicting another warm summer, but I hope it is NOT that warm. Of course temps at depth could still be in the low 50's (I had 50 on a few summer dives last summer, but that was pretty deep).

thanks Dr Bill. The last time I was at Casino point I do remember there was a pretty intense thermocline at about 50fsw.
