After lurking for a while, I figured that the day after the first classroom session was a good time to start posting.

Anyway, the Wife and I decided to get certified after we started looking at a 2007 trip to Disney and thought that the Divequest program just looked too cool to pass up. I've always sort of wanted to learn to dive anyway, and She's interested in having the certification from a resume perspective (Zoology major - works for a Zoo...).

Anyway, after much reading here, we signed up for classes at the local SSI affiliated shop. They do a 5-6 week program which appeals to us much more than the other LDS's "2-day + quarry" program. Being able to take our time, as well as the promise that their program is "as long as it takes, no extra charge" was a big win for us, as well as them being close by.

We've already managed to commit the first faux pas of course -- after the mediocre sales pitch for the required Boots and Snorkel, and the fairly limited (IMHO) in-store selection of each, we went and ordered these on-line. Figured that warranty wasn't really an issue with these two items, and fit is pretty basic as well (shoe size). We figure we can save a couple of bucks now and be able to use the LDS for the things that really matter like masks and fins...

Oh, and we also like their approach of using the first couple of pool sessions to try out different masks and fins to get an idea what we might want to buy, vs the other LDS simply doing a "well, we have a couple kinds in the bag, so you can sort of try different ones..."

First pool session is Thursday. If I can avoid annoying the Wife with constant "well, I read on scubaboard that..." comments, I thing I'll survive :)

Welcome Travis,

You should take pride in saying "I read on Scuba Board that...." You are a well educated person, I can tell! Enjoy your diving... it's great to hear your wife is getting certified too, that will be great. My wife and I love to dive together.... so have fun! :)

Well, I have a bad habit of "reading ahead" if you will on things - I get too excited about them, go out and read everything I can find, then want to share it. She basically wants to (rightfully so) learn things from the instructor, not me and my book-smart self :)

In any case, we are in fact in agreement that several of the tips I picked up here as far as picking an instructor were in fact useful, so all is not lost. I think we're both excited about the whole adventure, except maybe for the cost of course.

Thank you.

Welcome. Once you guys get certified and have a few dives under your weightbelts, your wife may want to consider volunteering as a diver at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. You can find details at www.aquadivers.org.

Welcome to ScubaBoard!

I don't have a wife.. yet. My ex-girlfriend (NOW fiance`!) is just tired of me with "scuba this, scuba that, get dive computer this, get diver computer that, etc..etc... (you get the point)"... Quite funny.

Also, my LDS is probably getting annoyed with me as well. "I read on ScubaBoard <insert EVERYTHING here>." They say they don't mind, but you never know.

Enjoy your classes. I wish I would've went with my LDS, but my buddy's uncle "knows this guy"... Well, I won't go into detail, I just wish I would have a better experience. Speaking of classes, my dive buddy and I are taking Nitrox next week. just received the book yesterday and I hope to be abke to study it the rest of this week and sometime this weekend. Well, with all the diving we are planning, I might not be able to. :)

Good luck and welcome to the world of scuba.

Michael
