What are the differences between standard and hogarthian set-ups?

There is no difference because hogarthian is the standard. Sorry couldn't resist.
For one a hog setup will have a continuous webbing where a 'standard' setup may have one or more shoulder release buckles. Dive Rite Deluxe harness comes to mind.
Long hose and bungeed necklace, course you can dive that with any rig.

The definition of hogarthian gear setup would be the least you can dive with, though the least you can dive with safely is sorta more how it's applied.
It is the minimalist approach to diving gear that as was said is almost the opposite of a standard and only requires you ask "do I really need his on this dive and/or can it be made simpler".
The DIR crowd evolved from that but added extreme standardization and redundancy for safety.

Hogarthian rigs developed out of cave diving where people wanted a simple, no nonsense rig with a high degree of standardisation (meaning everyone would know exactly where a certain item was on each other). It is basically a backplate, a simple harness and a wing type bladder BC with a long hose primary and short bungeed secondary (that was the best choice for cave divers as it allows for single file exits while air sharing). Accessories are placed on it in standard locations such as can lights, cutting tools etc.

Standard - not sure what you mean by it.

since this is the "Basic Scuba Discussions", I'm thinking the OP means "Standard" to be the "octo donate/triangle" configuration.

Since a jacket BCD (with a shorter hose primary, a yellow longer hose with a stowed secondary) is the config the VAST majority of the world dives, I imagine that could be referred to as "standard".

Pretty much like a front-engined, front-wheel drive, 3 box sedan is the "standard" car.

The config. described above is what I refered to as standard.
I was confused by the backplate I saw on the DGX website as far as a hogarthian (DIR) setup.

By standard regarding reg. setup I meant long hose secondary. Regarding backplate and harness set ups I was unsure of the difference between the harnesses I see sold as standard and the ones refered to as hogarthian.
