I'm used to signing the standard PADI created liability release form with most dive shop I've used in the Caribbean and Mexico. One form. The operator we're using in Cozumel has sent me a medical statement form, a liability release and standard safe diving practices statement. Is that the normal practice with Coz dive operators or is this one just being very cautious? If it's standard, why so many forms in Coz and not elsewhere?

This sounds verry odd to me. At most you would expect a single liability release. Are you taking a class with this shop? If so the others would be required.

No class or training of any sort and not part of a group trip or anything. Just diving for a few days. I'll contact them and ask what's up. Seemed very nice in the emails back and forth, and other people have had to question this too if its not standard Coz procedure. Overall I think what they're asking is within reason and mostly expands on detail of what's included in more general terms on the standard one-pager. We're pretty easy going people and low maintenence divers. I don't want to seem difficult.

Sounds like they've sent you the forms to take a class. Maybe they are either confused about your plans or confused about what is the appropriate paperwork that PADI want's them to get signed for insurance reasons. Are they a new shop?

There's no "Coz" standard so to speak. Every shop has their own requirements which you have to follow if you want to dive with that shop.

I require a dive application and the boat release. My dive application also has some medical questions on it regarding major medical issues or conditions that are not compatible with diving.

You mentioned that your lawyer husband may make some changes to the documents, I don't advise this. Those were drawn up by PADI lawyers and those are the legal terms we are bound by as PADI Professionals. Those are the terms that must be agreed to if you want to dive with the operation. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate it if someone came into your place of business and stated that they wanted to do use your services/products, but they were going to change the terms and policies to suit them. It doesn't work that way. If you tried to change the wording in my documents, you wouldn't dive with my operation. My operation, my boat, my liability, my rules...period, no discussion.

By the way, I have some experience drafting legal documents myself ;)

All sorted out and no problem. I have to appologize for jumping the gun with my post. (must be careful to think more and type less) And Christi, I totally agree.
