Otpimally, it will depend on the diver. I had mine shortened so I had just enough cable to fully extend my arm. Took at least 6" off of it, so that there is less loop to drag or hang.

I am ordering a light and have no idea what should I ask for in terms of length. Or how to determine what is needed.

You could try lying flat and using a cloth measuring tape from left wrist at full extension, along arm, across chest, down to right hip to give you a ball park figure.

On Steve Lindblom's "Divelight Companion", he states that the typical person will need 4 feet of cord, but he also says that a shorter/taller person would need to adjust this length accordingly.

When I rebuild a Can light for a diver in Canada, I asked him if the original length was good or not, and he stated it was actually a tad short, so I made the replacement about 6" longer, and he is very happy now, so again, best to do like others recommended above and estimate the length that would work for you and your setup, and then add a "little" bit to cover range of motion while in actual use.

Dive Rite lights usually have 42 inch long cords. Light Monkey sells 4 foot cords separately and probably use the same standard length on their lights. The length you need depends on a few different things. Where are you planning on mounting it? Which hand do you plan to hold it with?
